May 24th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123 Triad

The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center opened its doors to the public on November 25, 2002 in Appleton, Wisconsin to rave reviews. The new $45 million facility opened its doors only 31 months after breaking ground. Not only was the facility built in a record amount of time, but it also was able to accomplish its goal of raising the $45 million through the private contributions of over 2,700 local residents and businesses.

Boldt Construction Company worked closely with Zeidler Grinnell Partnership Architects and Artec Consultants to assure that this facility was world-class in both the amenities and the acoustics it has to offer its audiences.

NAMIT ARORA, the founder of Shunya, is a travel photographer, writer, and Internet technologist. He was raised in India in the cow-belt city of Gwalior, famous for its imposing fort and the first epigraphic evidence of zero. His training at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bengal led him to Louisiana for graduate school, precipitating his great escape to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he has since worked at three failed startups and three big corporations.

At least his profession has afforded him opportunities to live, work, or play in scores of countries. During a two-year break, he created an extensive photojournal on India. His writing has appeared in sundry publications and he has recently finished his first novel (see some books he recommends). In Jan 2009, he began writing a monthly column for 3QuarksDaily.

Cities for Progress is a project of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. They are a growing network of locally-elected officials and community-based activists working together for social change. They are a network that incorporates local, national and global approaches to issues that affect them in their own communities.

Following in the footsteps of Cities for Peace local resolutions prior to the Iraq war in which almost 200 cities and towns expressed their concerns about local costs of such a war, Cities for Progress is taking on other issues including Universal Healthcare and opposing Wal-Mart expansion.

HandsOn Twin Cities

The Volunteer Center of St. Paul was founded in 1942 by the Junior League of St. Paul in response to the need to coordinate home-front activities during World War II (its original name was the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office). As the war ended, community members realized a continuing need for a volunteer office; early activities focused on settlement houses and work with the blind.

Expansion included the development of a corps of volunteer drivers assisting with transportation for medical and social service appointments that was eventually transferred to the Red Cross in 1976. In 1975, the efforts were re-focused, a training component for volunteer program managers was added, and the organization was incorporated into the Voluntary Action Center, Inc.

Trees for Cities

May 20th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123 Triad

Trees for Cities started life in 1993 as Trees for London when a group of young Londoners recognised the need for more trees in the capital. The founding vision, inspired by Jake Kempston who is still one of the charity’s Trustees today, was to establish a charity that would be highly practical and would work with local communities to get more trees planted and green those areas most in need of greening.

With Charity Commission approval, Trees for London was established with the following mission: “to advance the education of the public in the appreciation of trees and their amenity value, and in furtherance of this the planting and protection of trees everywhere, and in particular inner city areas”.
